Unfortunate But Necessary

Last week I wondered whether, in the wake of the terrorist bombings in London, it would "be too extreme to suggest mass deportations". It seems as though Prime Minister Tony Blair is taking such a move seriously:

Meanwhile, the British Parliament on Wednesday heard calls for tightening the noose around those who preach extremism from mosques, and Prime Minister Tony Blair said deportations of foreign extremists from Britain would have to be made easier.

"These who preach hatred come from abroad," said one member of Parliament during a sombre session where Blair made a distinction between ordinary Islam and the "evil ideology" of extremism and hatred.

I'm not sure if Blair's proposal would involve "mass" deportations, but it's a step in the right direction. However, we need to keep in mind that at least three of the bombers were born in Britain. A thorough purge would result in the deportation of many British nationals. It's a frightening proposition, but something needs to be done soon.
